How to Learn From Failure

Fault and failure are almost inseparable in most cultures, organizations or households.   Even a child learns that by admitting failure simply means taking the blame.  This is one of the main reasons why organizations are encouraged to shift to culture of psychological safety, where learning from failure rewards can be realized fully.

Failure is a very important step towards excellence. Integrity and creativity requires an honest self evaluation of deeds and words.  Analysis of this kind helps greatly in isolating causes with a view of preventing future problems.  Laying blame serves little purpose and teams should cooperatively engage to look at the failures and cultivate genuine solutions.  Exercise respect and dispassionate evaluation to create deeper understanding. Failure must be used as springboard to success.

Remove stigma of failure

Failure has to be recognized as an option and its inevitability accepted.  Initial response should not be punitive.  When pursuing cause do not be driven by the need or desire to assign fault.  To learn from failure one has to encourage the culture that makes it safe to fail if a chance exists of cultivating required trust for sharing bad news readily.

Define and interpret failure

Failure is a condition and a state. It is the omission of performance or occurrence.  The organization must give a specific definition of the omissions for consistency of application.

Failure is a learning opportunity

This helps in establishing mechanisms and a foundation to learn from failure.  Ones first impulse and their immediate response will provide the needed learning.  The lessons learnt will greatly help in minimizing, correcting and overcoming the failure as well as preventing future failures.

Treat failure as an option

Nobody is perfect and one must recognize the inevitability of it as a prerequisite to achieving the benefits provided by failure.

Treat inevitable failures as preventable

One failure is recognized by an organization as inevitable, it has to be viewed as preventable and the contradiction well managed.  This apparent contradiction should be accepted as it is important in preventing other failures.

Both success and failure are good. Success mainly confirms things for us:

These include:

·        Strategies

·        Resources

·        Hunches

·        Risks

·        Teamwork

The role of failure is to educate as we learn from failure. It simply tells us what we need to change like our plans, decisions, hunches, strategies, resources, teamwork and risks. With every failure there is a lesson learnt that helps prevent future failures.  This kind of clear thinking helps you achieve a successful future. The right question to ask yourself in this regard is what failure teaches you?

Failure must always be looked at as the stepping stone to success. Once this is clearly understood, you can encourage a set of risks that can likely generate desirable results. It is a goal that will help you move from point A to point B. However, you need to first of all do analysis of the risks to be taken. This is to make sure you are taking risks that have high chances of delivering required results. Improvements can always be made. This also ensures that not just anything is done and failures tolerated. There has to be limitations and thorough scrutiny of various programs started or projects.

A detailed examination of all relevant facets of the organization and proposals made should be first carried. Failure should be treated like success if real progress is to be achieved. It is the other side of the coin without failure success cannot exist. For success to be realized someone has to have failed in their first attempt. This is where improvement or change of variables comes in to further improve on the work already started before.  Do not be afraid to fail but learn from failures.

Failure and success can both be your friend as they are good. All you need to know is the roles they play in each others paths or your life. Learn from failure and confirm it with success.  Avoid blame game and in place seek to find the one single thing that when changed will turn your failures into success.  Always be open-minded and accept that risks can propel you to success you want.  Treat failure with caution  but never shy away from it simply learn from it.
