Failure is Not an Option

Failure is not an option was the tag line used by a newspaper columnist and attributed to a character in the movie, Apollo 13. While the quote became very popular, it is important to check out whether such a quote holds good in life.

The Definition of Failure…Can Failure Bring Success

Failure is the inability to meet ones obligations and when it occurs, it can leave both positive and destructive effects on a person. Brains do not always work in best interests of a person and therefore are default to irrational decisions especially if people fail to instruct them. Eliminating failure could also mean getting rid of a person's creative ability. The definition of failure assumes a double-edged-sword approach where it can imply both negatives and positives of failing to achieve an obligation.

If you are perfectionist or have a be-good mindset, you are likely to experience failure in your life and in this case, the detrimental side of failure. If you have a be-good mindset, it tends to cause problems when you are faced with something difficult or unfamiliar. The most probable thing that you will do when confronted with challenges or difficult situations is that you start worrying about making mistakes.

Since mistakes mean that a person lacks ability, you end up creating fear, anxiety and frustrations in yourself. These emotional indispositions in turn undermine your performance by impairing your working memory and disrupting the cognitive processes, which people depend on for creative and analytical thinking. When you focus on doing things too perfect, you are also in problems.

A perfectionist fails in engaging in exploratory thinking and behaviors, which are avenues for new innovations and knowledge. Therefore, in order to deal with failure, you need to accept that you are imperfect. You also need to allow yourself to make mistakes. You need not suddenly lose your anxiety and frustration when you perceive that you have failed in achieving an obligation.

People learn from mistakes and through failure, you could make a better you by achieving better results. Nobody wants to be associated with failure and this is because it internally or externally instigates feelings of contempt. In workplace, sports, and relations or schools, if you fail, relatives and colleagues think that there is something wrong. This perception and feeling of contempt may induce agony. It is essential that you understand the definition of failure so that you deal with it positively.

Moreover, failure is associated with negative connotations while success has optimistic feelings. When a person fails, he or she receives ridicule, condemnation, scorn or disapproval and on contrary, when a person succeeds, it is praise, joy and adulation. However, people cannot succeed always and therefore; they need to be prepared for failure.

It is certain that at some point in life, you will face setbacks and if you have no strong will of acceptance of failure, you may end up in bitter emotions that you may not be able to cope with. It is how you perceive failure, which sets you from the agony, and self-disapproval that you experience when you fail.  People should not let failure turn them down and they should instead learn from it.

When you fail, you should appreciate that you achieved that undesirable result and then analyze the situation to find out what went wrong and how you could have prevented it. However, saying that you should accept failure does not mean that you should continue making mistakes. Always ensure that you do not get into the same mistakes or situations, which led you to failure.

Is Failure not an Option in Real Life?

Nobody likes to fail and failure often instigates feelings of contempt, internally and externally. If you fail in a relationship, in school, in the workplace, your friends, colleagues, relatives and other people may well think something is wrong with you and you, too, may agonize and try to find out what went wrong.

Failure has negative connotations, just as success has positive ones.

A person who is successful receives adulation and praise, while a person who is a failure receives scorn, ridicule, or condemnation.

However, can a person succeed all the time, every time? It is not likely. Some time or the other everyone experiences setbacks. Nevertheless, it is how you view failure that sets you apart – failure can be learning experience and a stepping stone to success.

Reading List

Don’t let failure get you down – learn from it. Analyze the situation, find out what went wrong and what you could have done to prevent it. Resolve not to make the same mistake again because repeatedly failing is not good for your confidence and shows that you have not used the failure as a learning experience.

Failure is not an Option – What Failure Does to You

When you fail, you get a shock and face loss of confidence. If you don’t pick yourself up immediately and decide to do better, you give permission to the failure to erode your self-esteem. You can go into a downward spiral and even fall into depression.

However, failure can prove to be a ladder to success, when it takes you out of your comfort zone and makes you stretch yourself. If you have confidence in your abilities, or even if you don’t, when you try something that you think you could not do and emerge successful, you are growing and developing more confidence in your abilities.

Winston Churchill put it succinctly: “Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” He also said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts”.

Failure is Not an Option – Learning to overcome Failure

Failure causes problems in life, but it is important to remember that problems can be solved. In fact, there is no problem without a solution, provided you make up your mind to find the solution that fits and overcome the problem. Therefore, whether you have financial, relationship or even health problems in life, you can work your way round them and correct them.

When you take steps towards solving problems, you are building on hope and confidence.

A proactive stance gives the reins of life in your hands and the fact that you are working towards finding solutions is in itself empowering because instead of wafting for things to happen to you and being passive, you are actually doing something about it. Once you have solved your problem, you can move forward and go one-step ahead.

While you may think that failure is not an option, you have to admit to the possibility of failure. Sometimes, fear of failure is an important driving factor on the road to success.

In fact if you take the analogy of a car, when driving you can suffer from a flat tire, loss of fuel, mechanical failure or any other problem that can stop you from continuing your journey. However, all these are not insurmountable problems and can be fixed – they are only temporary roadblocks.

In the journey of life, you have to move ahead one way or the other, and eventually you will inevitably face roadblocks. It is overcoming the obstacles in your path that make you a stronger and more resilient person – each struggle that you overcome gives you the courage go further and each one is a learning experience that will help you succeed.

Repeatedly failing is not good as it can takes away your confidence and this means that you have not used failure as a stepping stone for success. A failure can be a learning experience where you improve on your weakness and mistakes. The way in which you react when you fail is what determines the effects of failure. If you fail, the first thing you suffer is shock and lack of confidence. It is at this point that you should act courageously and with hope to do better.

You need to pick yourself up and decide to do better because, if you do not take courage, you allow failure to erode your confidence, self esteem, and create fear. What happens is that you suffer emotional imbalances and could end up in downward spiral or fall into depression.

When you fail, it puts you in a challenging situation where you apply more of your abilities, skills, knowledge, willpower and efforts to achieve better results. This is where failure proves to be a ladder to success since it compels you to stretch your abilities. In addition, when you fail, you pick yourself up, fix the mistakes, and move on to achieve your goal. In essence, when examining the definition of failure, both positive and negative effects are looked at.
